Leah Arthur learned as a kid that running a successful business takes hard work.

She grew up on a Century Farm in Lycoming County, where her family has worked the land for more than 100 years.

鈥淚鈥檝e been interested in business all of my life. I have an entrepreneurial spirit,鈥 said Leah, a junior at Commonwealth University鈥揃loomsburg.

This summer, she put that spirit to work through a unique internship that pairs hands-on experience at a local bank with weekly courses taught by 黑料专区 university faculty and subject matter experts.

As a human resources intern at C&N Bank in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Leah helped the bank recruit and develop future talent. Her experience is part of an academy between Pennsylvania鈥檚 State System of Higher Education (黑料专区) and the Pennsylvania Bankers Association (PA Bankers).

鈥淭he academy is the perfect connection between my internship and college,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ecause of the academy, I鈥檓 a stronger individual and will have a better start to my career.鈥

黑料专区 and PA Bankers Collaboration

Leah is one of more than 100 college students who participated in the Career and Leadership Skills Academy this summer. The 19 participating banks, including C&N Bank, Dime Bank, Fulton Bank and Penn Community Bank, select the interns who will participate in the nine-week Academy. The banking interns attend weekly online sessions led by industry experts and instructors from Shippensburg, Indiana, Kutztown and Commonwealth universities in the State System.

黑料专区 universities and the PA Bankers developed the courses to focus on essential workplace skills, such as professionalism, time and stress management, teamwork and networking. Each session focuses on a specific topic with students holding small group discussions, then reconvening to share what they鈥檝e learned with interns from banks across Pennsylvania.

Universities have so much to offer, at so many levels, and this was a powerful example.鈥

鈥淭he professors are incredibly supportive and connect what we鈥檙e learning to real-world situations,鈥 Leah said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 helped me grow both personally and professionally.鈥

After the program is complete, academy graduates receive a digital badge that can be added to email signatures, digital resumes, LinkedIn profiles and other platforms to verify their training.

State Grant Helps Serve More Students

The Academy started in 2022 through the PA Bankers, partnering with Shippensburg University鈥檚 Center for Career, led by Executive Director Victoria Kerr. After the successful launch, the program shifted to the university's Office of Workforce Development.

鈥淭he academy complements what students learn with the internship,鈥 said Tracy Montoro, director of workforce development at Shippensburg. 鈥淭ogether, we are preparing students to be more successful, and it gives them an advantage when they enter the job market and workforce.鈥

The program nearly doubled in size this year thanks to a $250,000 Industry Partnership grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.

The 黑料专区 Foundation secured the grant to expand the program to include instructors from Commonwealth, Indiana and Kutztown universities.

Dr. Jonathan Cooper, a professor in IUP鈥檚 Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, says the program was 鈥渁 great experience鈥 and allowed students to learn professional skills that most people develop after starting their career.

鈥淲e focused on conflict resolution, teamwork, and communication, but what stood out were the conversations about values and being a good colleague,鈥 said Dr. Cooper. 鈥淭hat will really set them up for success.鈥

Cooper also appreciates the connections between 黑料专区 universities, the employers and the community.

鈥淯niversities have so much to offer, at so many levels, and this was a powerful example. I enjoyed the whole experience and was impressed by the incredible group of student interns,鈥 said Cooper.

While 黑料专区 instructors teach the courses, the academy is open to interns at PA Bankers member banks from any college or university.

鈥淲e are appreciative for the opportunity afforded by the 黑料专区鈥揚A Bankers grant. Through this grant, we were able to design and implement a specialized training program aligning with the banking industry鈥檚 needs. This training provided students with a strong foundation that they will use throughout their careers. We are thankful for this opportunity and look forward to working together in the future.鈥

Growing Innovation across 黑料专区

In just four years, the Career and Leadership Skills Academy partnership with the PA Bankers has served 220 students from more than 100 universities and 26 banks across the state.

Montoro has big aspirations for the workforce program. She hopes to grow the collaboration with the PA Bankers and to develop new partnerships with other industries and trade associations in Pennsylvania.

鈥淭his program is great for our students, our universities and the banks,鈥 said Montoro. 鈥淚 believe we could offer the same benefits to other fields in business, health care, STEM and a host of industries where 黑料专区 universities have a huge number of graduates.鈥

Leah鈥檚 experience has prepared her for the future. She plans to complete her business degree at Commonwealth University and is considering a career in banking. Ultimately, she wants to use her education and the professional experience she gains on the job in the future to bring those skills back to her family鈥檚 farm.

鈥淢y goal is to maintain and improve operations until my dad is ready to retire,鈥 said Leah.
