Ashley Rolles is determined to help older adults with speech and hearing impairments.

From Northampton, PA, Rolles is a graduate student in East Stroudsburg University鈥檚 Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) program. Her skills will be in high demand. The U.S. has shortages of speech-language pathologists and similar professions, especially in rural areas.

The training is extensive. At the university鈥檚 Speech and Hearing Center, Rolles gets hands-on experience
using state-of-the-art equipment to provide free services for regional clients. 

鈥淎long with the assessment and treatment of communication disorders, I鈥檝e also been taught important interpersonal and counseling skills,鈥� Rolles said.

While she wants to help older adults, Rolles knows people in other settings also need speech and hearing care. Fortunately, her education allows her to work at schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and community clinics.

鈥淚 wanted job security and to be in a field where I could help people, and this degree gives me both.鈥�
