Siana Sewell, Cell and Molecular Biology
Siani Sewell is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology at West Chester University in the pre-medical program.
She dreams of attending medical school and serving underprivileged communities in West Philadelphia.
To prepare for medical school, Sewell gets hands-on STEM experience through WCU鈥檚 Center for STEM Inclusion. The center increases access to STEM careers for all students by linking experts from more than 20 school districts, higher education, industry, government, and non-profits to encourage students to consider STEM jobs.
Sewell has conducted research thanks to the NSF-funded Scholarships in STEM (S-STEM) program supported by the center.
鈥淚 was able to complete two research internships back-to-back in two years with two different WCU professors,鈥� Sewell said.
鈥淏ecause of my research internships, I鈥檒l be able to conduct research at any hospital.鈥�
By assisting students like Sewell in clearly identifying the next step toward a STEM career, the center is creating more opportunities for aspiring students and helping to build a stronger STEM workforce for Pennsylvania.

West Chester has one of the largest centralized geothermal heating and cooling systems in the United States. It saves $1 million annually and significantly reduces pollution.
The Sciences & Engineering Center and The Commons, West Chester's newest and largest academic building, opened in the fall of 2021 to accommodate the University鈥檚 rapidly growing health science programs, physics, and the new biomedical engineering program as well as a dining hall and student support spaces.
West Chester has consistently been awarded the designation of 鈥渕ilitary friendly school鈥� by G.I. Jobs Magazine for creating an intentional culture of understanding, acceptance, and success for veterans, active military, and those who support them.
West Chester is a founder of the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research, fostering rain forest conservation, discovering new plant and animal species and new medicines, and supporting indigenous cultures.
The Business and Public Affairs Center achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification for sustainability. The School of Music and Performing Arts Center and the renovated Mitchell Hall are both LEED Silver.
